Chapter 10

“Ah, Ms. Marks, welcome back,” Tiffany said as Janet walked into the spa. “I’ll just let Vivian know that you’re here.”

Janet smiled, trying to hide her disappointment. “Thank you.”

A moment later, a woman in a white dress, who looked to be in her thirties, walked out of the door behind Tiffany. Her hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail. Her makeup had been expertly applied, leaving her looking more like a model than a spa technician. She said something to the receptionist, who nodded at Janet, who was the only person in the waiting room.

“Ms. Marks? I’m Vivian,” the woman in white said as she took a few steps closer to Janet. “Ready for your facial?”

Janet nodded and stood up, putting down the magazine she’d been flipping through. She followed the woman through the door, down the corridor, and into a small treatment room.

“Change into the robe and then make yourself comfortable on the treatment table,” Vivian told her. “I’ll be right back.”

Janet slipped off her clothes, leaving her underwear in place, and then pulled on the spa’s robe. She climbed on to the table and got as comfortable as she could under the circumstances. When she closed her eyes, her brain insisted on replaying the awkward scene between Edward and Claudia, so Janet opened her eyes and started to count the tiles on the ceiling. She was just starting to fall asleep when the door opened.

“Ah, sorry to have kept you waiting. We had a small, ah, but it doesn’t matter. I’m here now,” Vivian said as she shut the door behind herself. “You have lovely skin for a woman of your age. What products do you typically use?”

Janet named the cleanser and moisturizer that she’d been using ever since she’d first purchased it at a high street chemist’s shop when she was in her teens.

Vivian made a face. “We sell several different product lines that might improve your skin’s overall condition,” she said.

“I thought you said my skin was lovely.”

“Yes, of course, but it could be so much better. We have a line of products especially for older women. You would start with two different cleansers – first an oil-based cleanser and then a water-based cleanser…”

Janet tuned Vivian out as she continued to drone on and on about the amazing products that would transform Janet’s life. As she talked, Vivian washed Janet’s face and then applied a thick layer of goo.

“And now we wrap you up to help everything soak in more deeply,” Vivian said before she started laying pieces of cloth all over Janet’s face. “And while you rest, you can decide whether you want to try our amazing product line or not. We have a wonderful starter set that would give you a month’s supply of every product in the line.” She quoted a price that made Janet’s eyes water.

“I don’t think that’s in my budget,” Janet said, struggling to speak as the goo on her face seemed to be hardening.

“We have a smaller package that would give you the absolute essentials from the collection,” Vivian offered.
